My Prefilled Vape tastes burnt

A burnt taste from a prefilled pod usually means the cotton wick got too hot or too dry. Here’s how to fix it fast and stop it happening again.

Quick fixes (do these now)

  • Stop hitting it for 5–10 minutes. Let the wick re-saturate.

  • Take a few gentle primer puffs (short inhales without overdoing it) to pull e-liquid into the coil.

  • Lower the intensity: if your device has power/boost modes, switch to the lowest/“normal”.

  • Check the pod: if the liquid is low (near/below the coil ports) or the flavour is still burnt after cooling, replace the pod. Once cotton is scorched, the taste won’t recover.

Common causes & how to prevent them

  1. Chain-vaping (not enough soak time)

    • Leave 10–20 seconds between puffs.

    • Take shorter, gentler draws; long, hard pulls overheat the coil.

  2. New pod not primed

    • After clicking in a new pod, wait 5–10 minutes before first use.

    • Optional: 2–3 light primer puffs before firing.

  3. Low e-liquid level

    • Refill/replace before the juice drops below the coil window.

    • Tilt the pod briefly to re-wet the wick if juice sits away from the ports.

  4. High power/boost

    • If your device offers “boost/turbo,” turn it off.

    • Stick to the recommended wattage for that pod (usually printed on pod or in the manual).

  5. Thick e-liquid (high VG)

    • Many prefilled pods use 50/50 or salt nic; thicker juices (if applicable to your system) wick slower.

    • If you can choose pods, pick the brand’s standard (50/50) option for best wicking.

  6. Very sweet/dark flavours

    • Sugary flavours caramelise and gunk the coil faster. Expect to replace pods more often with desserts/candies.

  7. Blocked airflow

    • Don’t cover the small air holes with fingers or pocket lint; restricted airflow overheats the coil.

    • If the pod has an airflow slider, open it a touch.

When to replace the pod

  • Persistent burnt or “singed cotton” taste after cooling/priming.

  • Vapour is hot/harsh with little flavour.

  • Visible browning of the wick near the coil window.

  • After several days to a couple of weeks of normal use (varies with nicotine strength, sweetness of flavour, and puff frequency).

Extra tips for longer pod life

  • Keep the device upright when possible so the wick stays wet.

  • Don’t leave it in a hot car or use it in freezing temps (both hurt wicking/battery output).

  • If you need stronger hits, try higher nicotine rather than longer pulls/boosting power.

Safety & disposal

  • If the pod leaks badly or tastes burnt from new, keep it and contact the retailer for a replacement (provide batch/lot if printed).

  • Recycle used pods/batteries via electrical waste bins or your local scheme (or use your store’s takeback programme).
