Too much of a throat hit when I vape

Vaping should be simple and enjoyable—but hiccups happen. The good news is most issues are quick to fix. We’ve put together this handy troubleshooting guide covering the most common vape problems customers ask us about. Keep it bookmarked, and the next time your device plays up, you’ll be back to enjoying your vape in no time.
An overly harsh throat hit usually means your setup is too “strong” for how you’re vaping. Try these fixes (quickest first):
Quick wins (1–3 mins)
-
Open the airflow a bit. More air = smoother, cooler vapour.
-
Lower the power. Drop wattage/boost in small steps; stay within the coil’s printed range.
-
Switch to a fresh coil/pod. Burnt or gunked cotton = harsh hits.
-
Take gentler, shorter puffs (2–3s) with 10–20s between pulls.
E-liquid adjustments
-
Reduce nicotine.
-
MTL/pods: step down a level (e.g., 20 → 10–12 mg salt, or try 6–10 mg freebase).
-
DTL/sub-ohm: use 3 mg freebase (salts are usually too smooth at high power, but nic level still matters).
-
-
Use higher VG. VG softens throat hit. Move from 50/50 → 60/40 or 70/30 VG/PG (ensure your coil can wick thicker juice).
-
Choose smoother flavours. Menthol/mint can feel sharp; desserts/creams often feel softer.
Hardware & setup
-
Use a higher-resistance coil (e.g., 0.8–1.2 Ω MTL) for cooler, smoother hits.
-
Check airflow & drip tip. A wider bore tip and slightly open airflow cool vapour.
-
Avoid “boost/turbo” modes on small pods.
Situational factors
-
Cold/dry air and dehydration make hits feel harsher—sip water and don’t vape in very cold air streams.
-
Allergies/sensitivity to high PG can cause irritation—try a higher-VG blend.
When to replace/return
-
Immediate burnt/charred taste after lowering power and swapping e-liquid = scorched wick → replace coil/pod.
-
Brand-new prefilled pod harsh from first puff? Likely a dud—contact the retailer with batch details.
Safety
-
Persistent burning sensation = stop using that coil/pod.
-
Don’t exceed the coil’s rated wattage.
